Fire Blotter, May 23

Gig Harbor Fire & Medic One assisted the Key Peninsula Fire Department to rescue two kayakers who were stranded on Cutts Island. Firefighters also responded to a head-on collision on Soundview Drive.

On May 13, medics responded to a 69-year-old female complaining of back pain. She had been seen for a back related treatment earlier in the week and the day before the 911 call she caught her walker on a floor mat and fell. This afternoon she was attempting to get out of her rocking chair when she lost her balance and slipped onto the floor. She then crawled to her phone to call 911 for assistance. Medics took special precautions to protect her head and spine and treated and transported her to the hospital for further evaluation.

On May 14, the Key Peninsula Fire Department was called to investigate two kayakers possibly stuck in the current between Glenn Cove and Cutts Island. They requested the assistance of Gig Harbor Fire & Medic One’s marine resources to investigate. Two rescue watercraft were launched from the SR302 launch site with three rescue swimmers. After a short search of the area, they located the kayakers stranded on Cutts Island. They were extremely wet and cold. They were on their way to Seattle when they flipped their boat several times and decided to set up camp on Cutts Island, build a fire and wait out the storm. The rescue swimmers then used the watercraft to take the kayakers and their kayak to the Horsehead Bay boat launch. At the boat launch the kayakers were evaluated by paramedics who warmed them with heated blankets and a heater then transported them to the hospital.

On May 15, paramedics responded to a call for a 28-year-old female with a 2-inch cut on the head after a fall. She had been out drinking earlier in the evening and had no recollection of how she got home, fell or struck her head. Medics cleaned and bandaged the wound and transported her to the hospital for further evaluation.

The vent was lined with lint, and there was standing water in the vent where it exits the dryer. They also found something burned to the exterior of the dryer basket at the mesh venting. The homeowner was encouraged to contact a repair man and not to use the dryer until it had been repaired or replaced.
