The incident took place at a Gig Harbor home in the 7200 block of Soundview Drive, on Tuesday, April 16.

On Thursday, Gig Harbor Police arrested a 47-year-old Gig Harbor man for the attempted murder of an elderly woman.

The 91-year-old Gig Harbor woman is the mother of the suspect’s girlfriend, according to Lt. Kelly Busey.

The incident occurred at the woman’s home in the 7200 block of Soundview Drive, on Tuesday, April 16.

According to the investigators, the suspect apparently attempted to smother the victim with a pillow-like object as she sat in a reclining chair within her residence.

She fell into a state of unconsciousness and awoke a short time later whereupon she was able to summon medical assistance.

The suspect had fled the scene. There were apparently no other persons at the residence during the attack.

The woman is hospitalized and is expected to fully recover from her injuries.

The suspect has been booked into the Pierce County Jail and will be arraigned on Monday.

It remains unclear if the suspect’s girlfriend was aware of this act and the investigation is ongoing.

No explicit motive for the attack has been identified, however it is clear that this was a specific, premeditated act and there does not appear to be a public safety risk.

“This was an unusual event for our community and many officers from our department worked quite well together to quickly compile facts, gather evidence and conduct interviews to determine what happened in this case,” said Police Chief Mike Davis.
