Tacoma Community College Names Tod E. Treat As Second In Command

After a nationwide search, Tacoma Community College’s new Executive Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs. Dr. Tod E. Treat, an Illinois native, starts in July.

Dr. Treat has served as Vice President for Student and Academic Services at Richland Community College in Decatur, Illinois since 2010. His responsibilities include transfer and health professions programs, student services, and institutional effectiveness. Key accomplishments while at Richland include establishment of the Richland Faculty Academy, a college-wide Learning Feedback System, and institutional advancement of completion with quality initiatives.

Prior to joining Richland, Dr. Treat spent two years at the University of Illinois as Assistant Professor in the Department of Education Policy, Organization, and Leadership. While at Illinois, he was regularly recognized for excellence in teaching. Prior to his appointment at Illinois, Dr. Treat spent five years as Dean of Academic Services at Parkland College in Champaign, Illinois. Dr. Treat began his academic career on faculty at Parkland, where he taught chemistry from 1994-2003. As a faculty member, he was very active in online learning and developed a novel team-taught interdisciplinary course, Essentials of Forensic Science, intended to build scientific literacy among career-oriented students.

Dr. Treat has published and presented frequently on international education, online learning, scientific literacy, and community college leadership. Dr. Treat served as evaluator for several international professional development programs, implemented by Community Colleges for International Development (CCID), as well as co-developer of CCID's System of Comprehensive Internationalization.

Dr. Treat has a Doctor of Philosophy from the College of Education at the University of Illinois, a Master of Science in Chemistry from the University of Colorado at Boulder, and a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from the University of Illinois.

He has served on boards of the Community Recycling Center (Champaign, IL), Cooperative Nursery School (Urbana, IL) and Children's Museum of Illinois (Decatur, IL). He is the father of three children, and is married to Suzanne Reilly, an educational policy historian.

Dr. Treat replaces longtime Executive Vice President Dr. Tim Stokes who in January became president of South Puget Sound Community College in Olympia.
